Why do we need a workshop on Domestic Abuse?

  • 25% of marriages are abusive
  • 1 in 4 women and 1 in 9 men report being victims of violence
  • 50% of men who assault their wives frequently assault their children
  • Every 9 seconds a woman is assaulted or beaten

We can rightly agree with assessment from the preacher of old, “Again I saw all the oppressions that are done under the sun. And behold, the tears of the oppressed, and they had no one to comfort them! On the side of their oppressors there was power, and there was no one to comfort them.” (Ecclesiastes 4:1)

God desires to rescue, “I will rescue my flock; they shall no longer be a prey.” (Ezekiel 34:22) 

In fact, Jesus Christ came “to proclaim liberty to the captives” (Lk. 4:18), which was good news in the first century and for us today!

The gospel of Jesus Christ “invites the sinner to find forgiveness in Christ through repentance and it also invites the sufferer to find refuge in the Comforter from a harsh, broken world where things like abuse occur.” (Becoming a Church that Cares Well for the Abused (p. 12). As God’s Church, we need to “be imitators of God, as beloved children.” (Eph. 5:1) Our church communities need to be a place of support and rescue for those facing oppression. Church leaders need to be equipped with a strategy of caring for the oppressed, and walking with the oppressor.

The TNSC Domestic Abuse Virtual Workshop seeks to be part of the solution by equipping churches, leaders, and family members in bringing God’s message of rescue and hope to those experiencing Domestic Abuse.

Schedule Information

Workshop 1: What is Domestic Abuse?

Darby will help us understand the situational context and biblical teaching on Domestic Abuse, which will allow us to define accurately and discern practically the signs in the lives of family, church members or counsellees.

Workshop 2: Ministry Priorities for the Oppressed & Oppressor

Darby will build on the foundation of Workshop 1 to help us prepare a strategy of ministry and priorities to care for the oppressed and walk with the oppressor.

Workshop 3: Q&A

After your registration, you will be able to submit your questions to TNSC and Darby. In this last workshop, we will seek to answer your questions. This workshop will have a limited timeframe. Therefore, depending on the number and complexity of questions, a selection of questions may be selected by TNSC and Darby.

Darby Strickland

I am a Christian Counselor who works with individuals, families, and couples facing a variety of issues.  I received my Masters of Divinity from Westminster Theological Seminary, where I met my husband, John. I teach Counseling Abusive Marriages for the Christian Counseling & Educational Foundation. I have written two booklets: Domestic Abuse: Recognize, Respond, and Rescue and Domestic Abuse: Help for the Sufferer. Working with a team I helped develop the curriculum, Becoming a Church that Cares Well for the Abused, a free web-based training that provides best practices for pastors, ministries, and leaders who minister in the context of abuse.  My speaking and writing focus on training churches and counselors to care well for those who have been victims of trauma and abuse.
